Not far from where I live, Grey Nurse Sharks (Carcharias taurus) are in residence at Magic Point in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra, New South Wales, Australia – this is one of the 16 known sites where these sharks aggregate in New South Wales. There are less than 500 individuals of this species left on the east coast of Australia. Although protected by law, they are still regularly killed by human activities, primarily commercial and recreational fishing.
IUCN Red List Status: Critically Endangered.

Thanks – it took about 20 dives at the same site to get this shot!

I wouldn’t have wanted to be this close to a shark Erik! You’re very brave but it was worth it- beautiful shot! x
Thanks – nothing brave about it, they are very docile. Because their teeth are like needles they can only eat what they can swallow whole – not like some other shark species that have teeth like steak knives!
Awesome shot Erik ! I am freaking out just thinking in how close to the shark you were when you took this photo … brrrrr !!! – me and sharks dont get along very well :)
Thanks! It took a long time lying quietly on the sand before the sharks were game to come close enough for a good shot – they’re quite shy!
Wonderful, simply wonderful. Sharks are my favorite animal. It pains me that these fabulous creatures are barely in the balance, and they’ve existed in this world for longer than we can imagine.
