Charcoal Drawing, 2007
Awarded first place portraiture at the Trafalgar Regional Art Exhibition 2007
I drew this piece from a photograph I took of my little sister. I captured her looking up at me from her desk as she studied for high school exams. She had only her desk lamp shining in her otherwise dark bedroom. I just loved the strong contrast this created.
I wanted to create a drawing for myself. Previously my art had been for an assignment, or at the request of someone interested in having a portrait created. This piece was my first ever planned work where no guidlines of any sort had been set for me.
When deciding to create this piece of my little sister and only sibling, I wanted to capture the gentle, caring and loving person that she will forever be to me. I will never part with this drawing.
Whilst announcing the winning piece, I was ever so humbled by and appreciative of the awarding judge’s comment that my drawing had ‘touched her.’

I think about this piece a lot. Today I thought your sister is stunning. As is this piece.
The photo must have had romance as there is admiration in abundance here.
