Eucalyptus Regnans, Styx Valley Tasmaniaby Erland Howden
One of the largest creatures on earth, an 84 metre Eucalyptus Regnan, in the background smoke from an aerial fire bombing masks the sun. Tasmania, Australia.
This spectacular sky is fantastic, and it’s frightened to think about the fragility of this wonderful giant of the forest while, somewhere, fire is eating trees… Great shot!
Yeah, this one’s 84 metres – but a few days later we visited one that was 91.7 metres. The tallest tree on record in the world was one of these Eucalyptus Regnans in Victoria – unfortunately they only found out it was the tallest when they cut it down – it was about 130m high (or long by that stage) :-(

Fantastic photo – the colours through the smoke are brilliant and you’ve really captured the scale of this massive tree (84metres!?!?)
