Uh-oh! Tripod broke. by ericb

Posted on June 18, 2010

Of all the frustrating things, my tripod broke today. The last extension of one leg just came right out and even though I can re-insert it, there seems to be a piece missing so the lock won’t tighten. I can epoxy the section in place and just use the tripod at lower heights, but that won’t be very satisfying most of the time.

So, What kind of new tripod should I request for my upcoming birthday? What brand(s) should I avoid? (the broken one is a Velbon) I think I would like to graduate to a ball-style head. Can a good quality, strong and stable tripod with ball head be obtained for less than US$200? Anybody have any recommendations or advice?

Eric, Its always annoying when you go from tripod to bipod. :-)

I would go for one of the Manfrotto range – I’ve used them over the last 20 years (my first still works great) and personally I think they are great value for money. This forum discussion should help you out.

Thank-you, John. I’ll check out that forum later this weekend.

Ok, I read that discussion. It confirmed what I had been starting to think while looking through the B&H Photo gear catalog (leaning toward the Manfrotto 55xprob with a ball head). Now I just need the money for it. $200 just isn’t going to do the trick this time.

The overall height this will reach and the swiveling center column are very attractive features even though it’s a bit heavy to carry.

Well, I jumped out of the $200 range. My Manfrotto 055xprob, 496 compact head with quick release plate and carrying bag arrived today. This thing is truly like an extra set of hands. I didn’t know a tripod could be so good. Happy Birthday to me.
