Happy Hoya

Erica Long

Brisbane, Australia

Artist's Description

This is a Hoya, a waxy sub-tropical plant that gets masses of these clusters during spring. This one trails from a hanging basket in my back yard in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. They are difficult to photograph as they hang downwards so their beauty is sometimes lost. There are varieties that are native to Queensland while others are found throughout South-East Asia and the nursery industry has created cultivars. In Brisbane, the Hoya is a food plant for a common black and white butterfly called a “crow”. Now if I could get a shot of both together I’d be happy!
