Artist's Description

Pen and watercolour painting on heavy cartridge paper, size 12 x10 inches

HMS Endeavour was launched in 1764, as a collier and named the Earl of Pembroke, She was purchased by the Royal Navy and refitted in 1768, as a scientific ship. She carried Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery, to Australia and New Zealand The voyage was from 1769-1771. She was used for taking stores to the Falkland islands as a private merchantman, for 3 years, then shae was re-purchased by the Navy and took part in the american war of independence, where she was eventually scuttled off Rhode Island in 1778.
