Zebra Longwing - State of Florida Butterfly
Dancing like miniature kites in the breeze today, they landed only for moments on this pink and yellow Lantana camara that is still blooming pretty well, even here in north Florida.
This Zebra longwing, the state butterfly of Florida, had it’s picture taken in my back yard, in Columbia County, just south of Lake City.
This is perhaps also one of the largest Lantan camara plants I’ve ever seen. Easily 8 feet tall and spreading over 10 feet in longest diameter. It survived the freeze last spring and returned bigger than ever. this one is yellow with mature flowers being pink. I have the usual yellow ones that mature red, they froze back and have been very slow to return, most that were in the four foot range last year, are hardly three foot high and with many fewer blooms.
