Beech Leaf Starlight (Fagus grandifolia) by

Beech-Hemlock climax forests may well be, in my opinion, the most beautiful forest type to experience. The cool dark spaces created by the thick hemlock foliage and the bright blazes of beech leaves and the pale contorted trunks that produce them have a truly unique effect. Sadly both species are under threat due to introduced disease organisms, and prospects are grim. There’s a chance of hope on the horizon for future healthy beech-hemlock forests, but in the meantime all we can do is enjoy and record the magic of what’s still standing.
