This is a sketch I did in 2002, with a black ballpoint pen in my visual diary from that time. I sketched from a photo that my father took of this squirrel monkey at Perth Zoo some time in the late 1980’s.
From memory the enclosure was actually quite large, despite how it may seem from this picture. Unfortunately for this little guy, he still has the somewhat ‘depressed’ demeanour exhibited by many zoo animals world-wide. Things have improved since those days, but there’s still a long way to go for many animals. Let’s hope the emphasis on improving enclosures and generally improving the day to day lives of zoo animals continues.
Hi Equinspire, I just thought I would stop by and see what you are up to. I hope you are continuing to draw and experimenting in other mediums. I can see that you really love to work with animals. This little monkey is very endearing. It’s very well composed and I love the details. Great job!!
Thank you very much Elizabeth! It’s true, I do love to work with animals. It’s difficult for me to think of any work of art I have ever made that does not have animals in it… they’re a rarity, that’s for sure! As I type this I am sitting on the floor with my little dog trying to hide behind my legs from the scary man outside mowing the lawn! :)

Thank you very much! I gave the card of ‘We Must Believe’ to my friend’s little daughter for her birthday yesterday. She loved it :)
