Artist's Description

The Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae is one of Australia’s most critically endangered birds. This small finch exists in scattered sub-populations across the ‘top end’ of Australia, and populations are in continuing decline. Threats to the species include heavy grazing of their habitats, disease, altered fire regimes and climate change. They occur in three head colour forms, this obviously being the red and the black, these both males.

A National Recovery Plan has been drafted which provides a framework for the recovery of the species in their natural habitat. These birds are part of a flock that is involved in a captive breeding program to ensure a certain level of security for the species.

Photographer: Steve Sass.
Camera: Canon EOS500D, 500mm fl.
