In Her Bloodstream
Each Who Sings Now? poem is inspired by a Teacher found in Nature; tree, stone, animal, plant, etc. All Our Relations are still willing to teach anyone willing to gratefully listen. Nothing is ever truly lost as long as there is still someone willing to look for it. Can you guess who is singing?

and Heart
Waves…
The Waters
singing their liquid,
ever-rolling song
drip from every leaf,
drop along a darkening Stone, and
roll like rushing white arms,
embracing the Shore.
carrying the Song…
Back to your Heart.
Who sings now?
“Evening breeze, spirit song
Comes to me when day is done.
Mother Earth awaken me
to the heartbeat of the Sea.” ~from Dancing the Wheel, a Sun Bear book
“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.” Kahlil Gibran
“The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea.” Isak Dinesen
Water is everywhere, in many forms, and life as we know it would not exist on this planet without it! Water captures the imagination like few other elements, and perhaps the most evocative is the Sea. The Sea has captivated the hearts, minds and souls of humanity probably from the first time our Ancestors encountered these birthwaters of our World. Mysterious and relentless, the Sea has been many things to people everywhere. Life, Death, Dreams, Healing, Purification, Timelessness, Inevitability, Knowledge, Fertility and many other things have been represented by the Sea over time. These collective Waters of the World are the blood of the Earth which shelters us and should be tended with loving care.
I was born in Los Angeles and before I was two I had swum in the waters of both Atlantic and Pacific oceans. To me, the Ocean is the heartbeat of my Mother. Liquid laughter, a powerful yet playful healing and cleansing element that sparkled before my wondering child’s eyes like limitless possibilities constantly on the brink of fulfillment. These salty waters spawned all life and have taken back countless souls over the course of history. All of the Waters are connected. The polar ice caps that reflect back the heat of the Sun help to keep temperatures reasonable. The droplets that collect to form Clouds eventually yeild themselves as life-giving, food producing Rain. The trickling streams and raging rivers form the veins of Earth’s coursing bloodstreams all of which, sooner or later, find their way to the Sea.
“Follow the river and you will find the sea.” French proverb
The Waters are a constant reminder that we are all connected and even our smallest action will impact on the World around us. A single drop of water will wear through the most durable stone given time. The relentless nature of water teaches us that persistance pays off. Water can teach us when to yeild, when to flow around the obstacles in our lives, and when to rise up in our fullest strength to overcome whatever lies before us. We bathe in water, but whether salt or fresh water we immerse ourselves in, Water can teach us how to clean more than our surface. Is there a better Teacher to show us how to clean up the spiritual and emotional side of our selves? Our own salty tears echo the healing song of the Sea when we purge our hurts and sorrows, yet another natural gift given to us.
The depth and strength of our emotions can be as mysterious, inevitable, overwhelming and terrifying as the Ocean. Being empathic means being aware of, sensitive to or vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts and experiences of another without having those conditions fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner. Empathic individuals often struggle just to understand where their emotions end and another’s begin. Whether one is empathic or not however, all too often we try to hold back the tide our emotions, avoid them, deny them, or even simply fear them. Like the relentless Waters though, they will only build up, adding pressure to our lives until they find a way to pour forth. Unexpressed emotions can lead to madness, breakdown or some other degree of tragedy. Lack of or excessive emotions indicate conditions like bipolar-disorder, schizophrenia, sociopathy, apathy, etc. Connecting to the Waters of the World can help you to open your inner floodgates, empathize with the World around you, find inner healing, and help you find your proper levels of emotional response and intuition.
We vary slightly in the water percentage of our bodily make-up, but we average between 60-55% water in our physical beings. People will die of dehydration long before we will die of starvation. On a daily basis, people generally do not drink enough water and are typically in some state of dehydration without ever realizing it. Essentially the function of every cell in our bodies is controlled by electrical signals sent through our nervous system by our brain. Our nerves are like an elaborate system of waterways and if the fluid inside our nerves thickens due to dehydration, or is contaminated with synthetic chemicals or heavy toxins like lead, our vital signals can become distorted.
It is commonly believed by many experts now that this may be the root cause of many degenrative diseases and neurological illnesses like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, anxiety, depression, Alzheimers and even the much debated ADD. I know from my own experience that if I do not drink enough water throughout the day, I am sleepier, more easily worn down and less capable physically, mentally and even emotionally. It has been medically proven that just a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25% to 30% loss of energy in the average person, and a 15% drop in body fluids causes death! In light of this information, keeping our system clear of toxins and in a proper balance becomes vital for a good and healthy life. For all our collected knowledge, we are still reaching for a sound understanding of how we interact with something as basic as Water. Grandmother Moon, Mistress of Dreams and Emotions, also has her influence upon the Waters of the World.
Those called by the Sea or Water in general should also pay particular attention to the Moon. For She orders the tides and has a greater pull on people in general than is typically acknowledge. This can be either constructive or destructive, and depends a great deal on our understanding of our selves and our awareness of this effect upon us. It has been proven that there is a greater chance of chaotic emotion during a full Moon, which often brings about accidents, arguements, and impulsive acts ranging from simple impulsive behavior to lethal violence. Ask any ER worker, law enforcement agent or therapist and they will probably have a wealth of stories to share about increased activity during the full moon. I know for myself that I often feel restlessly energetic, sensitized and bursting with creative impulses during these times. I also find new/dark moon periods to be rather restful and soothing, although I have found that I definitely have less motivation during these times too.
Dreams are amazing gifts in our lives and have many uses from simply keeping us in a healthily relaxed state on a day to day basis, to healing our worst wounds. In Dreams we can learn who we truly are and develop our latent powers of intuition. We can learn from higher beings willing to guide us, connect to the past, present and future, or reach out to the world around us. Our dreaming state is medically vital to us, and yet much of it still remains as mysterious and full of potential as the ever-rolling Sea.
“Let yourself be open and life will be easier. A spoon of salt in a glass of water makes the water undrinkable. A spoon of salt in a lake is almost unnoticed.” Buddha
“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” Lao Tzu
Still waters are highly reflective, and were the first mirrors. This reminds us that only when we have stilled our emotions can we most truly mirror the Beauty, Wisdom and Serenity of the natural World. “Still waters run deep”, “Blood is thicker than water”, “A fish out of water”, “Don’t make waves”, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water”, “water under the bridge”, being “wet behind the ears”, in “deep/hot water”, “skating on thin ice”, “bringing water to the sea” and “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink” are all common proverbs that give us clues to how we see this amazing element. Water can transform from frozen solid state, to liquid, to steam that can aid or destroy, to vapor born unseen upon the air. Water’s changeable nature reminds of the importance of trasformation and adaptability, but it also warns us of the importance of constancy. Being “as changable as water” can be helpful to our survvial, but is not typically seen as a desirable quality. Whether this beneficial or destructive really comes down to our awareness and our intentions.
The Ancient Sea invites us to explore our dreams and intuitions; to find our internal rythym and match it to the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Listen to the Ocean’s ceaseless song and learn how to heal the self, for only then will we be able to turn that healing energy loose properly upon the World we have so long neglected and abused. When we heal and understand ourselves, we will begin to understand and heal the World. Take a sea salt bath, read some poetry dedicated to the Mother’s waters, explore the World’s myths and legends revolving around the Waters, or read up on the factual information we have learned about the Seas and Waters of our home. Water is healing and changeable to the needs at hand. We should be grateful for the many blessings of Water we receive and try to live our daily lives with a full knowledge of this amazing and vital gift.
“We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.” Henry David Thoreau
“My heart broke long ago,
A love for which I grieve;
But now the sea’s my only love,
The only one I need.
O wide sea, O sweet sea,
Forever be my lover;
Fare me on your gentle wave
Your wide bed over.
The fickle wind’s my foe,
With tide his keen ally;
They’re jealous of my sea’s love,
And rouse her with their lie.
O sweet sea, O dear sea,
Heed not their stormy wile;
But bear me safely to my Hold,
And from their watery trial.” Eastern Sea Hold Song by Anne McCaffrey

This one is very moving for me Quinn – I feel such affinity for the water, more so for fresh than salt water but I cannot imagine a world where I could not see and get to water very quickly. I’m definitely not a desert kind of gal! Give me rippling streams and babbling brooks and clear spring fed lakes – or the ocean on a stormy day. This is just exquisitely beautiful – start to finish!
Quinn Blackburn replied
I too love water, although I have greater affinity for the element of Air… Storms are intensely moving for me… and storms over the Ocean are a piece of Divinity in action… Deserts have their own quiet, earthy and airy beauty, their time and place… but the oasis, or stream, in the desert is magical! Glad you enjoyed :) dear sister ~ wishing you laughter

Oddly I’m an air sign myself and I too love the wind and storm but I’m drawn to the water for some reason!
Quinn Blackburn replied
Water gives us a form to cling to, a lens through which to focus our Airy selves without the rigidity of Earth or combustion of Fire… Water is attractive to us, for all these reasons I believe, and also because Water is the element that teaches us how to express our emotional selves so we aren’t trapped in a cold lonely realm of Thought. My husband of 22 years is a Water sign lol
