Eagles are Go !

Many years ago, before I started painting in earnest, someone who ran a gallery in Sydney advised me to paint colorful birds like parrots and rosellas because birds of prey didn’t sell. I took her at her word.
After I sold my Golden Eagle watercolour and gouache painting at Christmas, I reassessed and decided to do an oil painting of an Australian Wedgetailed Eagle.

With the paint barely dry it went into a local exhibition and sold.
I guess that the moral to the story is that we should listen to advice from people in ‘the industry’ but not ignore our own gut feeling.
So I am now about to buy a thicknesser and a mitre trimmer with the proceeds of the sales to enable me to spend more time painting and less time framing.

    congratulations R!!
that’s excellent news….and i would agree… I’ve listened very closely to some people who gave me advice who were gallery directors…and it resulted in me taking a whole new turn with my work….i wasn’t happy about it to start with…but in the end….i tried something new, combined it with the old and grew from it, and developed my art further…. what one gallery director advised me was that the work was far too confrontational….with the girls looking directly at the viewer and that these would never be popular, and that i was best to go with the beachified look if i wanted to sell around byron bay, the touristy dollar…etc….. i was a little taken aback by her words (well devastated actually lol) that’s when i began to paint my girls with their back facing….these have been popular too, but in the end i returned to the full gaze…and i love doing both….even have done some side on views.. great to hear that you were able to buy some really great stuff with the proceeds!

I’m starting to believe that every painting has a buyer Karin. The trick is to find the right person. On a slightly different tack… It’s also nice when you sell one that has had lots of positive comments but never seems near to actually selling, as with Storytime which sold over the weekend.

As far as the paintings go K I’m still well ‘in the red’. Still, the sales are very encouraging, as are your generous comments. I’m putting three paintings in a local exhibition on Friday. I think that two of them are my best yet so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’ve scanned them so I hope to upload them to RB soon.
