there’s a mouse that lives in the cupboard where I keep the old vacuum cleaner that once belonged to my grandmother.
When I found the mouse, all curled up and sleeping in the curve of the corner, I screamed so loudly that the couple who live across the hall came bursting in, demanding to know who was being murdered. They have a little girl called Lacy.
Sometimes when Lacy got bored, she would sneak across to my door and knock softly. We baked cupcakes together and blew bubbles and talked about all the sort of things that girls should talk about.
We both agreed that boys were yucky.
Eventually Lacy’s mum got so sick of finding her at my house that we set up a weekly friday visit. We baked more cupcakes then decorate them, draw pictures and feed the mouse who we had named Iggie.
Lacy’s big blue, tear filled eyes find mine. we sit facing each other around my round table, fresh vanilla cupcakes between us.
Iggie is missing.
No matter what we try and tempt him with, the mouse just wont come out and eat the food we’ve brought him.
Lacy and I go from room to room, calling, till we both fall asleep in the middle of my bed.
The next friday, Lacy and I don’t bake cupcakes. Instead we go to the pet shop and buy a cute little kitten called Bunny.
Lacy reassures me Bunny isn’t going to disappear and maybe, he can help us find Iggie.
I haven’t put anything up on redbubble for a while… I’ve been suffering from horrible writers block and mountains of exam preparation…
Needles to say, when little Lacy grabbed my pen, I was more than happy to follow her along as she told me our story.
And honestly, I’ve become quite fond of her :)
