Photo Tips - Communication

Empowered Beauty Workshops and Melbourne & VictoriaWe have just run another workshop and have received some interesting feedback from the model, Lisa. I asked her throughout the shoot to communicate how she was feeling. At one break she suggested that it really helps when the photographer is specific with their directions. She explained that when you are modelling you cannot see what the camera sees.
Therefore it is so important for the photographer to continually communicate with the model. Both their directions and also the image being sought. Also greatly helps to give feedback on how the images are coming out. Lisa also explained that when communication is blocked that the model is likely to freeze up a little and look restricted and self conscious. I so related to this. I know whenever I am feeling out of my comfort zone that I worry about not doing things right or upsetting other people around me.
When it comes to the finished photo the end result is greatly affected by the level of communication between model and photographer in my opinion. Personally I feel that the energy when the camera is clicked is recorded and transferred for eternity whenever the image is viewed.
Further in society these days there is so much protection and manipulation in our lives. We so seem to want to hide our fears from strangers. Also most of us feel uncomfortable communicating to others what we observe about them and their actions. We would rather hold our tongues even if we feel our advice will help the other person.
In photos this also seems evident. So many images that in my opinion are not projecting a freedom of mood. It is my passion to help others to facilitate honesty of expression in their photographs. To this end if we can open up communication between model and photographer then our images can bring a much needed energy of freedom to the people viewing them.

Great post Tony, I think its too easy to get caught up on the technology of the camera or the props/staging/location etc that the emotion being received from a model is often overlooked.

Thanks for reading. I am learning more about the relationship side of photography all the time. Tech is so important but I think that the energy is the most powerful ingredient of a photograph.

Totally agree … this is one of the reason’s that I always work with one-on-one with a model. I find it too distracting to have someone else hanging around that could interfere with communication between the model and myself.

Yes, external people can create an extra energy that can distract. One on one is best provided that both people are himble and calm.
