Moonlight Apostles

Moonlight Apostles

‘The Twelve Apostles’ coastline of Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia. Photographed by time exposure (for 3hrs) at night by full moon light.
It’s typically very windy along this coastline and I found that a salt covered camera and lens plus slight movement from buffeting winds makes for poor quality and blurred results. So, right weather (pretty rare), full moon, lots of time, sand bags, beanie, and ample coffee were essential. Salt spray build up on the lens and camera wobble over hours ruined earlier attempts at this.
Tomiyama Art Panorama 6×17 cropped, Fuji Velvia film.

Ern this is so incredibly beautiful. It has a painterly quality about it that makes something very special indeed. I have never seen the Apostles depicted in such a beautiful way.

Magnificent shot. I have never seen a shot with such a long exposure. What a wondeful effect and a different perspective to an iconic Australian scene.

Ern this is amazing – I’d be asleep (or maybe that’s where you were for the three hours ) . You have really creted a wonderful original shot of a much photographed area. Congratulations

To me the 12 Apostles/ Ayres Rock etc. are almost cliche so to capture this over photographed area in such a unique, fresh, creative, memorable and expert way is truly a remarkable effort. The moon light and whispy sea are just perfect, thanks for the big effort and time investment you went through to take it.

Make lots of coffees, watch the stars and listen to Penguins calling far below.
Then there’s always BBC World News & stuff on the radio. I’ve done other longer exposures than this too where I’ve slept with alarm clock on. More soon.

wow, a three hour moonlight exposure. how much reciprocity loss and color shift was there with the Fujichrome? the sad thing is, without your description people would assume this is a digitally manipulated work. having shot long exposure on chrome i appreciate this masterpiece. everything as you say has to be right. i am impressed!!!

  • Ern Mainka replied

Thanks J.K. Surprisingly little reciprocity failure on this occasion. It’s little under-exposed on the tranny but with my Imacon film scanner and curves adj in PS it’s come up good I think. It’s rather grainy as a result though now and hard to get rid of in PS without losing the crispness, so am settling for a rather grainy look (when highly enlarged).

I meant ‘little reciprocity failure on this occasion’ as far as resulting color balance shift (reciprocity failure affecting exposure time as well).
