Stunning.
Rob McDonald
aweesome shot. i have to learn to do this
Ern Mainka
Thanks Andrew. This storm was coming straight at me on the jetty. I kept taking more frames in the hope of another beauty while feeling like I was playing ‘russian rulette’ with my luck and safety. The wind and rain finally hit blowing over my tripod while I was packing away the camera. I like the upper cloud structure and lower gust front cloud in this photo.
Rhana Griffin
Oh wow! This is magic on magic, with a dose of magic on the side. So glad you risked life and limb to bring this to us!
Matt Harvey

The clouds came out very pretty. May I ask what your exposure time was? I tried photographing a storm the other night, but I always managed to open or close the shutter too soon or late.
Ern Mainka
Rowan. About 30 sec or more at f8. The lens I’m using on that camera has a min aperture of f8, very slow. The upper cloud was illuminated by multiple flashes inside the cloud. I closed the shutter once I got a CG (cloud to ground) flash. Exposure time depends on how far away the lightning is, film speed, and aperture setting.
Ern Mainka
It might have been less than 30 sec. I took many frames at different durations. Some of the cloud appears frozen as it is illuminated by only a particular flash or flashes, some being weaker, some brighter.
Rowan
Thank you. I’m sure with practice I’ll get better at it…but it will be a long time coming before I manage one near your quality.
Lisa Kenny
