A taste of whats to come

Soft mist clung to the ground, it swirled and bared the earth below it as the small procession pushed their way forwards toward the dais.
The young woman with her hands behind her back led the way; her silken hood billowed as the cloak she wore filled with a damp morning breeze. Stray tresses of hair escaped and coiled into the first golden light of morning.
As they approached the wooden platform, Lilliana could feel the heat from the flames that licked against it, embers of smouldering brush and brown bracken glowed brightly with every tiny draft and the stage was set for her to play out her end in this life.
She looked around her at the faces in the crowd, no-one looked at her, some mumbled and shifted from foot to foot, others were silent and bow headed. All gave a homogenous aura of fear and confusion. A woman let out a cry; it was quickly muffled by her own hands, but the sound and the tears which accompanied it involuntarily changed the tone of the scene.
A sharp shove in her back made Lilliana jut forward; she steadied herself, as the ropes cut into her wrists her wits sharpened quickly. Another shove, more gently this time, pushed her a few more inches toward the flickering dais.
Lilliana drew a deep breath, she hung her head as if in prayer, slid her feet out of her slippers and kicked them aside, still under her skirts, nobody noticed her slight drop in height as she stepped from them on to the grass path, she bowed her head further and the soft green grass, cool and springy beneath her toes, damp with dew and as welcome as an old friend, honed her thoughts, she knew what she must do, quickly, before it was too late.
