This is an acrylic painting on canvas 80×40×4cms. This is of the sandy desert near Broken Hill, New South Wales, outback Australia. The sand really is red and the grasses grow out of the sand. It is very hot in the summer here. My son lived in Broken Hill for a few years and we went to see him from time to time, often going outback. Silverton was one of the areas which was used for the filming of the original (I think) Mad Max.

Please note: The original of this painting has now been SOLD at www.lizmooregolding.com

I work in different forms of media e.g. oil, acrylic (on canvas), pen and wash, pen sketch, hand-painted ceramics. You can see many of these converted into high quality cards, prints, throw pillows and tote bags which are for sale through www.redbubble.com/people/emgolding

Wonderful! I love looking at the fine grasses, and what looks almost like what we call “tumble weed” in the background. Your palette is gorgeous. Thanks for submitting this to solo, Elizabeth.

  • Hi F. A. Moore! Thank you so much for your interesting comments! Yes, the weed is a grass that will grow well in sand and in dry desert conditions. I don’t think this one tumbles like yours however! The colours of the sand are just as they are naturally – an amazing orange!

That is an amazing orange. I can see where the painting would have sold. It’s really outstanding.

Congratulations Liz! Your work finished in the Top Ten of the Earthy Tones Landscape Challenge

  • Thanks Linda! You probably know that this red colouring is not exaggerated. My son lived in Broken Hill for a few years and we went to see him from time to time, often going outback. Silverton was one of the areas which was used for the filming of the original (I think) Mad Max.

Yes, I absolutely know what you mean about the colours Liz. We visited Silverton and Broken Hill several years ago. Would like to return one day.

  • Hi Lynda! Well it’s taken me 2years to respond to your kind comment! Perhaps in the intervening time you have been back to BH! Hope you are well!
