like icarus

when i was younger
i would dream
of a world beyond my own
where i could be
simply me
a world where dreaming
was my reality

no aspiration was too grand
no ambition was too lofty
for me to conquer
or achieve -
youth lent me confidence

and one day
i gathered together
the feathers
of my dreams, soft as thought
and wove them together
with hope
and my vision
of the future

and then:
i took the jump
my heart soared
and i did too

but like icarus
i aspired too high

i flew too close
to the burning sun of your displeasure
the bitter fire of your words
melted the bonds
that linked dream with reality
hope with certainty
and i fell
like icarus

my youthful dreams
burn as i fall
their ash is scattered
to the winds

i fall
back to the cold earth
and plunge
into the sea

my dreams are nothing
in your eyes

I sighed deeply when I read this…especially the end. It’s bittersweet and sad. I can relate to this piece entirely, my friend.

You capture a loss of innocence beautifully Jordan, also the tenuous and fragile nature of perceiving oneself through the eyes of others. Nice work mate.

Beautifully written. Great meataphor. And I had dreams also broken, by my parents. Now, I have a big critc very close to me, especially about my writing. But I’ve learned not to let it make me fall. You see, I already fell. Now, I’m going higher and higher, thanks to the support of my RB friends and my children, who are my biggest fans. Great work. Love it.
