once we ran
side by side
you and i
bound by
childhood
and friendship –
simple bonds
that we knew
would last
forever

we were so
caught up
in the confidence
of our youth
the two of us –
always
equally matched -
you would push me on
and i
would do the same
to you

we raced
not knowing
our destination
or even our purpose
we just knew
that we were alive
and that we would get there
wherever it was
together

once we ran
side by side
yet now
i turn around
alone
to see
you falling farther
and farther
behind me

until –
i lose sight of you
altogether

This is so beautiful and sad and perfect.
I was so happy that you added “Just four chairs” and now you add more!
    You rock.

This was like walking through a dream or a distant memory- melancholic and bittersweet. Beautifully written.

oh sweetheart….people move in and out of our lives but are deep connections ever really broken? i don’t think so…we just think they are because the person may not be physically present. xxx

Wonderfully written. And sad but true.

You have captured first the joy of mutual friendships that are mutually inspiring and then changes when you race ahead and your friend drops behind or goes another direction.
I love the simple power and grace of your words as you lead us frolicking through this memory. Your wiriting is such a pleasure to read. You are such a fine poet my friend.

I really like this piece, it spells out perfectly how childhood friendships just sort of fade away. Sad, but the memories last a lifetime! Very well written!!

Beautiful! And something I can relate to so well, sadly. Though I sometimes wonder how strong my friendships were. Thinking back on the memories I have, none really stand out as great friendships, ah well. That’s life I suppose. This is great, I love the melancholy in it, and the rhythm. You are wise beyond your years, my friend. =] xx
