father

where are you?
i can feel your touch
lingering still
on skin and stone
and on my soul
the faint sheen
of your presence
like oil
clings to my fingers
when i reach out to grab
at something solid
at some small piece
of you

where are you now?
i look –
hope lodged inside my chest
like a bullet

i hold on to it
its feathers brush gently
against my hands
and i feel its heartbeat
so fragile and light
that i wonder how
it can still survive

i look –
but i find nothing
the wind whispers your name
the earth speaks
of your presence
in low tones that
i strain to hear

is it that i’m out of touch?
or were you never there from the start?

i call to you
from across barren deserts
and empty plains
but all i hear in answer
is a hollow reply:
my own voice echoing back
over the years

where are you?

it’s not yet night,
but fading fast

This really captures such a deep longing unanswered – love the lines – I look, hope lodged in my chest like a bullet – takes you right into that feeling >:

Thank you, Plum. I am refering, here, to both God and to our actual fathers. I appreciate your words.

Can’t describe how beautiful this is…..so profound and meaningful…
    hope lodged inside my chest
    like a bullet...I felt that.
I think KarenSue and Plum did a better job of describing this and I agree with them.
    Inspiring poetry, my friend.

  • Jordan Busson replied

Truly, my friend, I think that simplicity speaks.
