Artist's Description

Character – yes, that’s what I’d call this painting – workmanship and pride are good words to describe it too. Instead of quantity, the focus was on QUALITY. Products were like works of art where the maker was proud to stamp on the company name. And when it came to cars, the new owner could expect to drive it for years without problems – none of this “good until the end of the warranty” period when the car breaks down the day after the warranty expires. No, there’s something about that saying: they don’t make ‘em like they used to. They really don’t. It’s not about quality or pride of workmanship anymore – it’s just about the money.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… When I saw this old car tucked away in the back of a barn, I knew I had to paint it. For me, it represents a different era – a time when a person’s word was his bond. Builders of products didn’t worry so much about law suits because they didn’t scrimp on materials and just hope things would stay together. Now it’s all a game – how long will the building or the car or the clothing last if I cut this or that on quality … and will I get caught? Not … wouldn’t that be shameful.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
This wonderful old car is painted with mixed media. There are signs of rust and discoloration that show its vintage history. It’s a classic coupe deluxe. Classic. That’s another good word. In art, “classic” is the word used to mean that it set the style. A “classic Greek goddess” or a “classic Roman nose” are those that were made famous by the artists of that era – the ones that set the standard for those who came after. How far away have we strayed from “classic”? Oh, yes, we have modern conveniences and new wave appliances and inventions. But are they classic? Do they set any sort of standard at all? The comparison is no longer quality but profit. Give me classic any day of the week. Give me integrity and honesty. Give me “character.”
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
This piece would be a wonderful addition to any car collection. It is most likely a 1951 Chevy coupe. Abandoned, but not forlorn.
