Apparently this was my fault. You see, I was sitting there, minding my own business waiting for my food to be ready. Meanwhile I was photographing pigeons, especially a white one which appeared to be a turtle/rock lovechild but that’s another story for another photo. Anyway… a woman came along and decided it was a good idea to set her chips down on a picnic table. I went back to my pigeons. Next thing I know there’s an almighty noise… yep, that lady left those chips and had gone back to the counter, to her friend, whatever. Meanwhile the gulls thanked her for serving such a bountiful buffet.

Apparently I could have shooed them away instead of photographing.

Hmmmm. Not many chips left in this FIRST photograph :-P Also you can only see 3 gulls here but trust me there were at least half a dozen and Brighton gulls are HUGE. Ain’t no arguin’ with them! No sirree!!

Seriously though the only fault is that of stupidity. :-D All proceeds from the sale of this photo go to the “common sense awareness” charity. Or my Amazon voucher bank. Yep, that’s more likely. :-P

Hope you enjoyed the photo as much as I enjoyed trying to work out what to say to the woman. Actually there were no words I just shook my head and blinked a gazillion times. :-P Love how it was my fault.

And no….. I did not leave my food unattended for a second once it was ready :-P

haha brilliant story :) fabulous capture though, and I am with you if anyone is stupid enough to leave their chips………..wouldn’t see that here – no sireee chips are a premium! ;)

  • Thanks Pam :-D I know, I have no idea at all how it became my fault…. :-P Dinner is served, hehe.

Great capture and background story …. considering they’ll swoop down when you’re holding them it would be foolish to leave them unattended even for a moment … I keep hoping to get a shot when they swoop on the ice-cream cones but am always that second too late ha ha :)

  • Well, maybe I shall send Ms CommonSense-WhatsThat to Lyme and get her an ice cream cone :-P Then you are almost guaranteed a photo :-P She did not just set it down and step aside either by the way…. she passed my table, went to a table CLOSER to the pebbles, left it and went past my table all the way back to the counter and was gone ages before that happened. I assumed she’d put her bag down or something… Never dreamt she’d put food there.

I wish it was legal (outside of tabloid journalism) to add a photo of the person to the story :-P Although I did not get a photo of her to be honest.

LOL looks like these guys have had their chips, stunning capture

Hahaha … I can just visualise the whole event Ellis – It sounds hilarious. Those gulls are huge I wouldn’t fancy tackling them or wrestling with them either .. especially for food! No siree – I’m on your side on this one! lol
Keep a safe distance away .. with or without your camera.
Love the fun shot you managed to get and your write up is priceless. Thanks for the daily chuckle!
    FAVED.

Lol, those are some hungry gulls. Ah chips… we call them fries in Canada. Listening to English speech makes me miss England. The one in the center is quite dynamic; hope he didn’t choke on that fry… I mean chip. Nice shot.

  • Thanks!! :-):-) we call fries the thin gangly ones like those they sell in McDonald’s but proper thicker cut potatoes can only be chips, hehe. I have a close up of a gull swallowing a huge chip which I shall upload when I think of a title. Why that woman didn’t see what would happen is still a mystery to me. :-P:-P Thanks again for dropping by and taking the time to comment. :-):-)

Great capture of the moment, Ellis, and a definite Favourite for me! What a stupid woman! I cannot stand cold chips, so as soon as I buy any, I consume them at the first opportunity. We live a couple of miles away from a gull sanctuary, so there are always seagulls about the town – a lot bigger than those in the picture – strutting around as if they own the place. One who used to come into our street got so fat that he could hardly take off! People complain about them, but it is their own fault for leaving half eaten fish suppers, kebabs, etc, lying about instead of putting them in the litter bins. You can hardly blame the gulls. Why fly a couple of miles out to sea in hopes that they might catch a fish and then have to fly back to the mainland before they can eat it, when they can have a free bash with their mates by flying a couple of hundred miles down the road? I am sure that chips are not the ideal food for them, but hungry creatures will gobble anything that looks edible.

  • Thanks BMR :-) No, cold chips are not great. Even these were not worth the drama really but what does one expect from a place which has a numbered archway or 3 as an address? :-P Still, yep, totally not my fault :-P If I had seen them land that’s a different matter entirely but to put JUST bought chips down then walk away for a fair time (I guess until the gulls could no longer feel the steam coming off them…) is just nuts :-) Ooooh, gull sanctuary? I am intrigued ::googles:: I have been to a gull colony once and the odd penguin came along to see what was on offer but it was not a sanctuary as such in that there were sadly a lot of juveniles and babies who did not… make it and who were still there for people to see… just a protected from evil humans colony :-P Anyway I have to look for the other one. Larger gulls you say? Sure they aren’t albatrosses? Albatrii? meh… :-P These were large, their parents were humungous :-) Anyway thanks again!! ☺☺

Sorry, I meant to say “a couple of hundred yards down the road”. My mind was obviously focused on those chips!

  • Hahah, no problem I literally/genuinely laughed out loud just then but would have understood anyway ;-)
