I love snakes and reptiles, weird I know, seeing as I have such a literal terror of butterflies and the like. Anyway for some reason my photos from Adelaide Zoo’s reptile house were not my best… with one exception. I am happy with this. His eye is in focus, the colours of his scales are clear where they need to be.

Please please please if you are out there taking photographs of reptiles in dark reptile houses or of fish in aquariums or nocturnal animals (you are getting the picture now I am sure) please do NOT use flash photography. Ever. It p**ses them off. It hurts them. Not to mention ruins the light of sensitive/sensible people who just change the light settings on their cameras, only to have a bizarre exposure when someone else’s flash goes off.

Seriously though… they are in dark dark exhibits for a reason. If you cannot cut the flash on your camera or phone, then please do not depress that shutter :-) Thankyou.

Madagascan Tree Boa (thankyou DragonFlyer for making me check on this!!!) or Sanzinia madagascariensis

Good on you for adding the info re reptiles sensitivity to light and to not use flash photography with them!!!
This guy looks rather large – is he a boa? Cos he doesn’t quite have the look of a coastal python… I’m not quite sure from the patterning – but – I LOVE snakes too…. (got 3 at home :)))
    K xx

  • Thanks :-D He might have been a green tree boa. I would have taken a photo of the sign using my IXUS, but as I was away for a month I have a humungous amount of photographs to look through to find it :-P googles

OK definitely not that… nor a green anaconda, that I can see.

I shall endeavour to find out, images are on my travelling laptop and I shall bubblemail you when I find out :-D

I like snakes as well ..and you captured a beauty here.. the focus on his head is perfect

  • I’m glad you like it, thanks.

Funny really that I am so strict about “sommerfugl” images, am so terrified of them…. yet ADORE snakes and lizards…. :-P

I can’t say I like snakes as I have a real fear of them ~ love lizards though :) … however I can appreciate a good capture of one and this is excellent ~ wise words on the flashes too .. i have also put up with grainier shots of birds for the same reason ~ always respect wildlife :)

  • Thankyou for getting over your phobia just to come and comment! Thanks, I was so happy that it came out… most didn’t. :-)

It REALLY bugs me when I go into an aquarium and see flashes everywhere. :-)

Sssssssssssssssuch a great shot. Wonderful use of depth of field.

  • Thankyou ssssssssso much! Was just lucky with the depth of field but I used non auto settings, so be proud, be very proud, lol.

Sadly, learning THOSE non auto settings meant that this was the only one that really came out, also they did not equate to a good photograph in the real world.

Part of me thinks a course would help, part of me thinks “no… I have all the ‘for Dummies’ books, I can do this!” a final part is just like “they have semi-auto functions for a reason and when I do get it right it makes me feel good so just go with the flow until it clicks” heh… :-D
