Seagull by ellismorleyphto

I am so sorry, I cannot think of a better title. As for the story, this seagull was very friendly, let me get so close to him, although was constantly watching. It was that cold he may have wondered if I had food… like a seagull needs a reason to eat of course…. this was near the Statue of Liberty ferries I think, although as has been the case all but one of my times in NYC, the islands were closed to the public, however, plenty of people were still queuing up to go on a river cruise, despite the bitter drop in temperature. Then again next time I go I shall be with a first timer and will be doing the touristy things with her, no matter the weather, I shall be One Of The Nutters :-P

In the end, the seagull did not like the people we were attracting and nodded and flew off. What a cutie.

Battery Park, NYC, NY, USA. 16th March 2013.

Canon 400d 75-300mm lens.

As is. Straight from camera.

Thank you for including your stories – they add so much to the image! Great detail on this fellow and boy, he does look serious. How often do you get to NY?

  • Thanks! Not as often as I like, there’s an ocean between us, after all. Last time I went (before March I mean) was 2009 and I just had 1 night in Hells Kitchen at the start of my trip and 1 night in Queens. One night in NY is enough for me in the way that I feel so at home there, I am just happy that I went at all. Just seeing the skyline from Newark when I was going home from my friend’s in Jersey, was also enough as I knew I had 3 nights there the week before. I shall be going back in September with a co-worker who has never been so I am guessing we shall be a little more touristy, although we shall be staying in an apartment rather than a hotel which makes it a little less so. :-P

Great portrait! How about calling him “John Livingstone” after the seagull in the book?

  • I will not pretend to understand the reference but John does suit him. :-)

I read the book “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” (Juan Salvador Gaviota) in translation, while I was doing field work in Spain for my degree in Spanish in 1980. I never read the original in English by Richard Bach, nor did I see the film, but it is a good read, though I have to say that I do not agree with all the views of the author.

  • See, now I could understand calling him Salvador… sounds a lot more exciting!! Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, I was using my work computer which runs IE. :-)
