written ode to Kate O'Brien's 'Spy in the House of Love'

She was a spy in the house of love
painted face and a rubber glove
a rubber band and in demand
worn taut over a lonesome hand

all you can’t deliver
all that makes him quiver
takes more ’en patience to infiltrate
checkmate is your new cell mate

immense and calculating
she don’t stick round for debating
soon she’ll flight to Bermuda
where in her dreams… she’ll bed your suitor

for once…he was hers
if you were quiet you’d hear her purrs
as her scent still lingers in his sheets
and it’s her photo your forced to greet

alas… he is a sea man
he’ll be more ’en both your demon
before your tears and to calm his fears
he sails your bath humming hmmm…once hurt..twice shy…my dears

cleverly ensures he’ll have the last laugh
as he ain’t game to stick round for any awkward aftermath
exhausting all rivers as solitary
he’ll have it any way but…missionary
