I found these flat, wooden cut-outs on several lava mounds around the Big Island of Hawai’i. Since I saw several different animal shapes, I assume it is a popular idea – whether with tourists or with locals, I’m not sure.Can anyone enlighten me?

Was this on the west side? I can ask the ranger at Puukohola – she seems to know about most everything on the Island and I didn’t think to ask her when i was there in May.
