No to sure what you did with this, E, but man does it look good !! :)
ellcot replied
Thanks, Stan! I almost didn’t upload it, ‘cause I wasn’t sure I liked the result or not. I basically desaturated and added a gold/orange filter. the original is very colorful but doesn’t capture the mood I felt when taking the shot. This part of Hawaii is kind of desolate – lots of open space, stark landscape, lava rock…
Barbara Brown
I agree with Stan!! This is lvely!!

Brilliant tones. My memories if Hawaii are more along the ‘green’and ‘endless beach’ lines – this is just amazing!
ellcot replied
Thank you so much! I love the BIg Island because it has such a diverse range of climates and landscapes. The volcanic ash creates a lot of dark, moody skies in certain areas and the miles of lava fields makes a stark landscape. I have yet to really capture that very well, but maybe I’ll get another chance someday! :) Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!

Cool image! My mom used to pick the seeds from this tree and make head bands. A lot of drilling and a lot of hard work. Anyway, it’s really kind of fitting that you went with the hues you did because Waikoloa gets really windy sometimes and it kicks up a great big cloud of red dirt…almost looks like the color you used. Wow, I’m feeling rather nostalgic now. I used to live near there.
ellcot replied
I am so amazed at your comments, Maileilani!!! What a wonderful story and information about this place! We really love it there and are going back soon. I remember the wind and the incredible red earth! Can you tell me the name of the kind of tree this is? Do you live on the island still? I’d love to hear more!
PBWright
Beautiful! I love your treatment!

I don’t live there anymore. I live in Oklahoma now…don’t ask. Anyway, the tree is a Wiliwili tree. It actually flowers too. The seeds only come, though, when it loses its leaves (like in your image). In fact, I think I can see some pods on it. Sometimes the seeds are bright red, orange, white, and mauve and sometimes you get seeds that kind of look like the color of kidney beans. I found a great example of a lei made of these seeds here
Because they are so much work, they’re also very expensive.
ellcot replied
I’m so glad to learn about this tree, Maileilani! Thank you for sharing this wonderful information!
