The wooden sculpture and the blue door were photographed by me in Cuautinchan , nearby Puebla, Mexico. In this little, picturesque town there is a 16 century Franciscan monastery.
The red flower is called “colorin”, coral tree, botanical name Erythrina coralloides Its white wood is used for making bungs and, especially in San Luis Potosí, figurines. The clusters of red flowers on the naked Coral Tree make it an attractive ornamental. The seeds are very poisonous. The flowers are also used as a food source. You can eat it as “tortitas de colorin”, which is something like a hamburger. The cooked flowers (with salt, garlic and onion) have a flavour similar to beef – it is really delicious!
