I Used To Run Away

This is a poem written about my memories from when I was in my early forties, and couldn’t drive yet, it just came back to me, those days are
precious to me now.

I Used To Run Away belongs to the following groups:

When I was young, and got upset
I would run away
No, I don’t mean when I was little
I was married and couldn’t get my way

Of course I had the perfect marriage
I write about it all the time
but today something came to me
A memory of mine

My guy and I didn’t always agree
Gee I wonder why
Doesn’t everyone have these problems
and throw their hands up in the sky

We had four kids, and I never knew
Until talking to one today
How they would always worry
When I ran away

This particular time we had a tiff
And I couldn’t really go too far
So he had a cup of coffee
Before putting the kids all in the car

I didn’t learn how to drive
Until my middle age
So I had to walk or run away
When I got in a rage

He always took his time
In coming looking for me with a smile
I think the furthest I ever got
Was about a half a mile

Well, this day it was snowing
And I can’‘t remember what it was all about
But I was walking down the road
Hell bent, when I heard him shout

Hey the kids are scared,
Get in the car and I just kept on walking
And all the kids yelled out the window
Ma, come on home and do some talking

I never knew they really thought
That I would ever leave
It was just my way being childish
And getting on with my peeve

So in the snow I’ m trudging
No boots and my feet are cold
Kids yelling out the window
And I began to fold

He stopped and opened up the door
I got in the car beside him
And I sat there looking mad
and he gave me that cockeyed grin

And then I had to laugh out loud
At how silly it was to run away
When we got home he rubbed my feet
It felt real good I have to say

So if you’re married and you run away
Learn to drive a car
take it and let him have his coffee
But don’t go very far.
