Mephistopheles

Technique: Hand-drawn, Digital Painting.

Created: March 2008

Description: Mephistopheles is a name sometimes given to a representation of the devil or Satan. However, this interpretation tends to be more humanoid in appearance opposed to his other cloven-hoofed and horn adorned varieties. Mephistopheles is said to be a tall man and the “Red Book” that he carries contains the list of people who have sold their souls.

In Greek the name translates roughly into “Not a lover of the light”. The Latin translation suggests “pungent” and finally “liar” and “destroyer of the good” in Hebrew.

I really enjoyed painting the smoke with the slight hint of the stone floor beneath, as well as the subtle addition of “El Diablo”, the hand gesture symbolic of the devil.
