Birder’s Paradise by

OK, so it is not everyone’s cup of tea, but this photo was taken in fading light at the Alice Springs Sewage Farm. The Crakes were scampering around the muddy fringes of the settlement ponds, the yet to be identified Snipe had gone to find a safe place to sleep and the Fairy Martin swarmed like mosquitoes feeding on the rising hordes of buzzy things setting out for their evening activities. I had seen around 40 species of bird, some from as far away as Mongolia, others more familiar, all enjoying the permanent water and abundant invertebrate prey that characterise such infrastructure. It was a lovely evening. You’re not a real birder ‘till you hang out at shit farms! Northern Territory, Australia.

What a place to have a cup of tea!!! Good one!!! :-)

  • Thanks Blossum, a cuppa would have been nice! Although I do tend to draw the line at eating in sewage farms, it just feels (and occassionally smells) wrong!

This is such a beautiful shot – just look at the colour of that sky and the disappearing sun. It’s awesome!

  • It was a hot one too, I guess mid to high thirties, so the disappearance of the sun was a relief. Thanks Anne-Marie
