Through the eyes of a child, Ica by

In August 2007, a major earthquake devastated a number of Peruvian cities, including the city of Ica. This photograph was taken approximately four and half months after the earthquake on the day that UNICEF organised a special activity day for the thousands of children who lived in Ica.

The photograph was taken while we waited for transport to go the stadium where the festivities were being held. The day itself was all about fun and games and treats for the children but reality was rather sobering, that these children had lived through something more terrifying than most people will ever see in their lives, two and half minutes where the world literally shakes buildings to pieces.

Location: Ica, Perú

This organisation provides assistance in disaster zones during the initial stages of the emergency. HODR volunteers arrived in Pisco shortly after the earthquake and were there, helping the people of Pisco, Ica, Chincha, Paracas and Cañete til January 2008.

it must have been so frightening for everyone there, especially the vulnerable, innocent children who have no understanding as to what was happening all around them. 2 1/2 minutes must have been so long for them to endure. I cant even imagine living through that.
wonderful photo, and thankyou for sharing something I didn’t even know about.
