Artist's Description

Southwell Minster was allegedly founded in 627 by Paulinus (see the Minster’s baptistry window for his “mug shot”!) and totally rebuilt by the Normans in 1180 as part of the Diocese of York. Indeed, of the ruins, only the Great Hall survives, and alongside the Minster are the ruins of the Palace of the Archbishop of York and, not as many suppose, of the abbey. Like all great churches, there have been problems. In the Civil War, damage was caused to the Minster — and particularly the Palace — by marauding soldiers, and in 1711 a bolt of lightning hit one of the spires, destroying the roof, bells, clock, and organ. The present roof is actually Victorian, and the “pepper-pot” spires added in the 1880s returned the architecture to its Recent state
