One of the most impressive sights I have ever seen. It’s history dates back to 708, when Aubert Bishop of Avranches had a sanctury here. It quickly became a place of pilgrimage. In the 10th century the Benedictines settled in the abbeyand a village grew up below.. Its ramparts and fortifications were never breeched by the English during the 100 year war..In 1863 it was used as a prison.. It is completely surrounded by water at high tide..
