who took my mojo, man? by Charlie Watkins

You know the drill, you’re bored, un-inspired, you have your camera with you but it all looks the same? Somehow you come back from somewhere with only a few general snapshots and nothing really artistic or creative.

I’ve been in that funk for a while – lack of time, sleep, illness, work, rain, blah blah – it all adds up to take away the photo mojo.

Its not going to get any better over the next few weeks either, work, family stuff etc all taking priority over photo taking. The daylight doesn’t help either, its golden hour right at meal preparation time, so there’s no getting out, even if the sky was lit up like fire.

So what to do?

Well, I’ve been tinkering away with photo apps on my iphone, which is a surprisingly effective creative tool. Photographer Chase Jarvis uses his all the time and its easy to see why. When you only have a minute to take a shot, or you’re just on your way somewhere, it works wonders. They’re not brilliant, its no substitute for a proper session with the main camera, but its helping stoke the creative fire.

    I know the feeling.

I was shooting 2-3 concerts a week for different folks, and just ended up burned out. Nothing was helping. I tried shooting landscapes, portraits anything but it just wasn’t working. I turned to some old medium format film stuff, and it just reignited everything. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone… going low tech, or even no-tech really makes you work a bit harder and enjoy the act of shooting more, rather than just the end results

looking at your shots – I love your new MF stuff, its wicked! I’ve been shooting with a Holga for about a year and love the results, but its been letting me down (it is after all, a piece of plastic junk) and I’ve switched to my Trip 35 instead. Have a boat load of film to process, so we’ll see how that comes out :)

I’d love a Hasselblad – I keep on eyeing up 500CM’s on ebay, but just don’t have the funds to justify the $800 or so for one – its almost bonus time at work, maybe then.. :)

Thanks.. I have a few people that helped . They have made me look good. I’ve been using a friends Hassy, I’m totally spoiled now.

Thanks.. I have a few people that helped . They have made me look good. I’ve been using a friends Hassy, I’m totally spoiled now.I found a Bronica medium format that was pretty cheap. I will be home in a week to give it a try, and I’m hoping to get some good results. Regardless, it’s making me slow down, and think before I shoot. I’ve played with my Holga, but I still feel like I rush through my shots with it. Digital feels totally disposable when you’ve played with a Hassy. I think it’s time they started halving the price, and handing them out to everyone :)
