photo manipulation before digital

If you think manipulation of photographs is somehow new and all to do with nasty computer things, think again!

See http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/farid/research/digitaltampering/ ... starting with

  • circa 1860: This nearly iconic portrait of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln is a composite of Lincoln’s head and the Southern politician John Calhoun’s body. *

manipulation of photographs is almost as old as photography … and politicians got into image manipulation almost at the the beginning!

Now this is amazing who would have thought that photo editiing started way back in the 1800’s. Looking at that link kept me entertained for ages. Thanks for that , I dont feel so bad now.

That is indeed an interesting bit of information. Thanks for sharing it. Not nearly that long ago, my grandmother would paint a bit of color on the eyes and lips of her subjects, and of course done by hand. She put her photos on the ceramic works she created. Her bit of photo touch up isn’t much in the way of manipulation, but part and parcel in the big picture. Photo manipulation has a long history, and rather interesting one at that.
