Selfportrait by Ine Spee

I’m slowly working through all of my assignments. This is one of the few that I can actually upload here.

For our Composition class, we were asked to draw a (self)portrait and have a certain meaning behind it (sort of). So I drew myself, kinda trying to hide behind my hair (because I’m a shy and quiet person), but not completely hiding, still trying to see what’s going on around me (because I’m also curious and like to look at things around me). And stuff like that. My brain is dead.

It’s not a perfect selfportrait (nose is kinda off, and the eyes are wayyy too far apart but it looked even more wrong whenever I fixed it, so in the end I let them be), but I’m happy with it. Mom said it looked like me. =P

Anyway, done with oil pastels on paper (60×40 cm).

I am a former Illustration student who finished her Master degree and is now looking to take her love for art further. I hope to someday be able to do illustration as my profession and to make my living that way by becoming a children’s book illustrator. I love bright colours and cute images, because I don’t think there’s ever enough of it in this world!

Well, don’t be to harsh on yourself, the down points you mentioned give it a certain cartoonesque look and feel which I rather like.

  • Ah, well I’m glad they work then. I wasn’t sure it was still any good, but then again the portrait isn’t supposed to be super realistic anyway, so all is good. =)
    Thank you!

ine, you’re very talented and have no need to hide behind anything, though i do understand shyness. So lift that chin up girl and smile you have talent and natural beauty and you don’t have to prove anythin to anyone. hugs to you :)

  • Thank you. I’ve actually gotten a lot better about my shyness over the last two years. My teacher didn’t even believe me when I said I was shy. =P

I agree entirely with Maximus. You are obviously talented and from exchanging a few Bubblemails with you I know you are also well mannered and modest. This is a lovely portrait and I particularly am impressed by the way you’ve done the hair. May I wish you every success in your exams.

  • Thank you so much Dave. =)
I’m glad you like the way the hair turned out, it was a bit of a challenge with those thick oil pastels. But yes, I do agree it turned out quite well.
And thank you for the good luck wishing, I can certainly use it. Three more weeks and summer is here! =D

i like it. going borderline surreal is quite appealing. exaggerate even more and i think there is a strong style there! keep it up!

  • Ah, thank you. =)
