Professor Wole Soyinka – The Nobelist

Medium: Watercolor, watercolor pencils, acrylics & Acrylic gesso
Ground: Stretched Canvas
Process: impasto, finger painting, use of brush, and pallete knife

This is my ‘failed’ attempt at painting with only watercolors (I ended up adding other media) and, in the end, I came up with this…

This is a portrait of a man I admire and an artistic inspirational figure, Akinwande Oluwole “Wole” Soyinka (born 13 July 1934) is, a Nigerian writer, poet, playwright, and political activist.

Professor Wole Soyinka, has an extraordinarily prolific and rich body of work which includes, plays, novels, poems, and essays, Professor Soyinka draws on both Yoruba and western culture to exquisitely weave a subtle understanding of the tragedy and comedy of the human condition. As a reward for his literary contributions to the world, he was rewarded with a Nobel Peace Prize in literature in 1986.

He has also been an implacable, consistent and outspoken critic of many Nigerian politicians, military dictators, and of political tyrannies worldwide. And according to him, a great deal of his writing has been concerned with “the oppressive boot and the irrelevance of the colour of the foot that wears it”.

Ladies & gentlemen, meet ’The Nobelist

He was right the colour of the boot is not the point

  • Glad you looked thoroughly & liked it Bev. This kind of art is always extremely pleasurable for me when, you struggle & apply enough tenacity until it just has to pay off :)
