Let me quickly say that I have never been to San Francisco (or even to the United States, yet)+. So the inspiration and challenge for me was, to paint a city that I have never been or seen.

I tried doing some research on the internet to, gleen as much information as possible but in the end, the explosion of information was becoming more of a hinderance than a catalyst. So, after my first few WIPS, I went back to Pat’s photo, and decided that I would look more ‘symbolically’ (as I usually do) at the ‘’Essence of San Francisco" and translate what I felt about this city as an outsider looking through someone else’s image.

By the time I got to the last stage of this painting, it reminded me of my Homesick paintings and how every San Francisco resident must feel when they are seeing, feeling, & crossing the Red Bridge, to a Golden City, with no gates (by the way), on their way home…

Man, Eddy, this is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. What a fine abstract, with minimal palette for the backdrop. I love it!

Textures are wonderful, too, providing perfect highlighting for the buildings, and giving depth to the piece. Super painting.

  • (Sorry I posted this in the wrong comment box again – arrgh!!!)The textures and the golden colours of the city are symbolic, meaning, a healthy and wealthy city. And refers to the past, present and, (hopefully) the future of San Francisco and all our favourite cities, for that matter. Thanks again for your usual in-depth comments :D
