This is spectacular! Thank you for diving into the depths to give us a glimpse of things most of us never see. I especially love the vibrant colors and the transparency of those fins! Incredible work. P.S. This may be a dumb question, but how do you get such good light so deep? I know nothing about underwater photography so it’s hard for me to imagine a flash that works in water! I hope to learn something from you in this regard.

Thank you…anyway an underwaster camera (pretty much by default these days) has a flash on it. However, because of the flash pointing directly the same way as the camera lense, particles in the water (those little specks in the green in that picture) get illuminated, which is a nuisance.
So to get rid of them you need a thing called a strobe…its a powerful flash on a pole. You position the pole so that the strobe points at the target from an angle, which reduces those little dots (or ‘back-scatter’ as they’re called).
I haven’t got a strobe yet (expensive). Need one to take pictures of fish more than a foot or two away with a flash.
So yes, this photo did use a flash. :)
