Two very interesting insects find themselves atop the blossom of a milkweed plant (<em></em>). The bright orange and black, milkweed bug (<em>Oncopeltus fasciatus</em>) in the upper right is actually a prey of the insect larvae found in the lower left. This is the larvae of the lacewing (<em>Chrysopa</em>); green lacewings are insects in the large family Chrysopidae of the order Neuroptera.
The lacewing larvae, was interestingly, the model for the alien creature inserted into Reliant officers Commander Pavel Chekov and Captain Clark Terrell, in the infamous Star Trek movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It certainly looked alien enough in the show and so it does in real-life, too.
Lacewing larvae and the adult are voracious predators. The larvae are used, with mixed results, as biological control agents.
