Artist's Description

Today is ANZAC Day in Australia and a time to commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

Remembering Uncle Reilly, who served on continuous Full Time War Service in the Australian Imperial Force from 10 June 1940 to 6th October 1945 for a total of One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty Five Days.

More than 5 years of his life. His Slouch Hat with Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge and his Medals: 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service medal.

During World War Two, troops who were on active service in the Middle East at the time introduced a folded puggaree as a distinguishing mark of active service.

This folded puggaree had seven pleats, one for each state and one for the Australian Territories. It was made from light khaki coloured cotton and was worn on the slouch hat with a unit colour patch sewn on the right side.
