The Wreckage of the Peter Iredale by

According to Peter Iredale – Wikipedia, the Peter Iredale “was a four-masted steel barque sailing vessel that ran ashore October 25, 1906, on the Oregon coast en route to the Columbia River. It was abandoned on Clatsop Spit near Fort Stevens in Warrenton about four miles (6 km) south of the Columbia River channel. Wreckage is still visible, making it a popular tourist attraction as one of the most accessible shipwrecks of the Graveyard of the Pacific.”

The bones of this vessel is a sight to behold, especially when the sun is going down and your seeing it with someone you love that has never been to the beach before. I’m looking forward to seeing it again. I once had a conversation with an online friend where I compared my inner child to that of a ship wreck. I made that conversation into prose. Someday, I will share it all, but here’s an excerpt:

I think there is a little girl in my mind that has yet to grow
trapped in the past, emerging in the present… yet fearful of the future
She’s ensnared in an emotional wreckage of a churning sea
A ship’s skeleton of decaying, broken wood; forgotten and laying on the bed
of a murky, dim ocean

Wonderful shot of this wreck with moody clouds and reflections. The bird as a special touch too. Thank you for the background information and your thoughts about that little girl ensnared.

  • Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a wonderful comment! Yes, the bird was a nice touch. I didn’t even see it in the frame until I got it home on the computer! I guess he wanted his picture taken? Haha. Thanks for the favorite, too! :D

This shot is another of my favs. It has such an old world feel. I love it!

  • Ooooh, nice! I didn’t look at it that way until you said something. Leave it to a poet like you to find just the right ambiance in a scene! Thanks for the fave!

    Love these old shipwrecks.

  • It’s probably within 6 hours (give or take) of Bellingham, you should go and make a weekend out of it! Check out the area!
