I usually photograph them with a thong………..great shot!

Looks like a black widow to me!
hi irene it is definitely a redback spider, which are endemic to australia, they are in fact a member of the widow family of spiders however :)

Paul, it definitely makes me want to step on it!
i dont blame you, they have a nasty bite :(

So that is one of the wee blighers I’ve heard so much about! Excellent shot and DOF.
How big is this spider – we can see the detail of the carpet so they must be tiny.
Congrats on the Image of the Day feature. Kasia
many thanks for your comment, the spider was approx 3-4 cm in length, they are quite a small spider in comparison to many others but they pack a nasty punch all the same :)

wow. this looks like it’s b & w with selective colouring. great capture – i’ve not seen one in years!
thank you for the comment, i appreciate it :) the terry towel polishing cloth the spider is seen on was actually green in colour, I have desaturated all the greens in the image which left the spider untouched. unfortunately i see these little terrors all too often around home :[

Please tell me that this bad bad spider isnt on your carpet! fantastic use of SC! Good luck in the United SC Challenge!
not on my carpet no, it is a polishing cloth i use on my cars, they dont tend to come into the house, but do find homes in my over crowded shed all the time. thank you for your comment, i appreciate it :)
