ABOUT The Ten Strings of My Heart
The Ten of Hearts has six layers and is one of my favorites it is both about longing and falling love. Here’s the poem that I wrote that I chose to alongside this painting the book of art and poetry entitled “House of Cards: The Heart Suit.”
A strand drawn immeasurably thin
stretches between us; when you accidentally
brush your finger across it, disturbing my sleep
with its silent hum, I wake, calling out your name.
Layer One – In the background is the Magician from the Tarot, which was the card my husband always chose as representing himself.
Layer Two –The next layer is based on a floor painting with ducks, papyrus, and lotus flowers from Tell-el-Amarna, 1379-1363 B.C.E.
Layer Three – Over the papyrus and the lotus flower, I superimposed a line drawing of a tree with ten hearts hanging from it like ornaments.
Layer Four – Then I embedded the woman playing the harp among the trees the papyrus and the lotus files.. She is based on a wall painting of musician with a harp from the Tomb of Nobles, Luxor-Thebes, 18th Dynasty, 16th-14th BCE. The hieroglyphics in the background are from the same painting.
Layer Five – Then came the layer with the ten swords falling like rain – one for every heart.
Layer Six – Finally, the Ten of Hearts playing card completes the painting.
