Brown Bear - Katmai National Park, Alaska
Location: Hallo Bay – Katmai Natl’l Pk, AK
When the bears become extinct, man will follow shortly
Every bear has a different mentality, tolerance & reaction.
Bears recognize human fear by scent and body language.
Bears really do not want to be your friend (sorry Tim).
A hungry, injured or frightened bear knows no rules.
A breeding male bear or female bear with cubs makes the rules.
The male bear is the dominant species of under current rules.
Weaned juvenile bears are almost always hungry, curious & unpredictable.
Stalking people is a unnerving game played by some bears.
Bears learn on the first encounter, while it takes humans two or three tries.
Electric camp fences are a form of bear torture pending retribution.
Stress in bears can cause a similar unpredictable reaction as stress in man.
The human species is the most easily humbled by a bear confrontation.

Hi Dyle,
Both this photo & Alaska Bear are more than great. Facing the pic, the left side in shadow needs to be lightened.
The fine details in both photos are exceptional.
I wish people would write a wee story about their photos – example – what was your speed for this pic?
Thank you for putting me on your list.
Take care, Bonnie

I believe this bear’s name was Eddie…not sure as we saw nine bears that day. He was approx. 100 yards away (cropped photo) but the sow I photographed was within 25 feet. While walking down the beach we started seeing the bears fishing along the creek beds. Our group soon assumed a passive position by sitting on some logs with our guide and observed them for several hours.

So true, as evidenced in Steven Herrero’s book, “Bear Attacks.” Now those are “truely grizzly” stories!!
Dyle Warren in reply to Frank Legault’s comment, 3 months ago
Thank you Frank! Everyone should have this experience at least once in their lifetime…
Lensman2008, 3 months ago
I saw a TV program on the National Geographic channel which demonstrated the ‘mechanics’ of a bear attack by use of a mechanical bear, employing ‘animatronic’ techniques, and that thing did some damage to a side of pork, I can tell you.

Wow, awesome animal, brilliant capture
Dyle Warren in reply to Eldon Doiron’s comment, about 1 month ago
Thanks Eldon, not real good with distance but I think this bear was approx. 200 yards. I cropped this particular image, not so with my other bear “close-ups” as I didn’t need to. The sow sat just 20-25 feet away from us and our guide….
Eldon Doiron, about 1 month ago
Good to trust your guide…lol

This is great! The way the water is dripping from his muzzle reminds me of my dog after she’s gotten water – she practically goes swimming in it (which, obviously, the bear was doing).

Stress in bears can cause a similar unpredictable reaction as stress in man.
Too true! Remember the guy who got his head bit off, where the bear apparently stalked him and came up behind him quietly while he was tying his shoe? Totally unpredictable behavior for a grizzly, but, they are starting to get crowded out in spaces in Alaska and these things will happen.
Nice capture, so to speak.
