Collision

Original Acrylic on canvas

this to me is not a reflection or expression of the present, but is a painting that has come to reflect a moment from my past.

as my addiction was beyond out of control i was at a crossroads several times, over several years, where i wanted change, for drug abuse to end, to live a better life … the only thing stopping me time and time again was the confrontation with facing a reality that had built up to being much worse than it ever really was. Made much worse from constantly escaping through drugs. When i finally had enough, embracing and facing my damaged mind, spirit, my nerves were a wreck …. my reality of everything that was and wasn’t … finally crashed … broken from this collision …. there was nothing left …. only what i thought to be an impossible future ….

six years later …. although I’m grateful for the experience and all that it taught … I’m glad I’ll never go thru it again

Very honest of you D, the painting expresses your experience completely, you are one of the lucky one’s that came out the other end, there are many that dont, my cousin died from heroin abuse, it was the most shocking part of all our lives watching helplessly as she fell deeper and deeper into the abyss. You should look at yourself as a messenger that says there IS hope left, and your wonderful work is a testimony to that :)

  • Damien Venditti replied

thank you so much Marina …. there are so few positives with seeing or being addicted …. the only real one is surviving past it and learning …. and seeing life and yourself in a better light is so priceless …. i feel for your cousin, you and your family … thanks again for your kind words : )

i did my best with this painting to not think of anything, clear mind, just go for it, it wasn’t until the very end that it started to mean something to me .. which was cool … thanks for your encouraging comments Ali : )

An abysmal collision gave way to a new birth… a soul’s rebirth – the neurons and synapses all firing at full speed with great depth and breadth… intense! Being intimate and embracing adversity is simple, but never easy… A bittersweet story unfolded, stroke by stroke, and beautifully told. Well done and congratulations, Damien!

An extremely evocative piece, engaging colours and emotive words…Drugs for any creative mind is always a double edged sword…it has the power to heighten ones creativity but when the ‘downer’ kicks in there is no safety net…I’m glad to hear that you survived!
