Ok I have to admit, totally clueless about this.
I entered the Western Districts National 2009 comp via electronic submission. I just got in the mail my ‘results’, of the four images I entered. It says three are accepted.
What does this mean? There is an acceptance level too, what does that mean!
I don’t really get how national comps work as this is my first.
Must be some bubblers who do :)

I would think that there would have to be a limit on the numbers of entries. If everyone sent in ten…….they woul dhave to have a cull of some sort. They would therefore only select the ones to be in the final selection process……..only my humble opinion.
Natalie Manuel:
Yep there was, you could only enter four. But does ‘accepted’ mean they just go through to be judged more? And I guess a high acceptance level is good or..(as in, one got 11/15, another got 12/15?).
I can’t find any kind of newbie FAQ about nationals, it’s not particularly user friendly.

Not sure without knowing the details of the requirements of the competition?
Natalie Manuel:
Ta, the aussies will be able to help me I’d imagine :)

Hi Nat.
Firstly congratualtions on your three acceptances.
The judging is conducted by three judges who allocate a score up to five points each.
Let’s say each judge scored your photo 4 points each. Total score = 12/15. Acceptance level could be 11 points depending on the number of entries in that category – worked out as a percentage I think. A score of 12 would give you an acceptance.
Hope that helps.
Natalie Manuel:
Thanks Darren. So that means there’s judging now just at the actual exhibition?
Darren Stones
Judging is done prior to the exhibition, Nat. I’d say the images will be projected for viewing from 3rd to 28th August 2009 at Charles Sturt University Dubbo.
Natalie Manuel:
Ah ok, ta :)

Hi Nat,
I also not long received my results for the Pakenham National. I too got 3 Acceptances and a Second place…
You letter means that the judging has been done and that your images were of a standard that were Accepted into the exhibition. As Darren explained the judging is done across a board fo 3 judges and a score out of 5 is given… they then look at the amount of entries and work out the ACCEPTANCE level… then form there they look at the score that represents a merit then second and then first.
3 Acceptances from 4 images on your first NATIONAL is exceptional… you should be very proud. Congrats!
xx Sam
Natalie Manuel:
Thanks, for some reason I’m a total duh brain when it comes to understanding comps, hehe.
So is that all that happens? Is there anywhere that explains the best result you can get, or is there just acceptance, and then those who actually win each category?
:)
Samantha Cole-...
ooops not the Pakenham National that was supposed to say Warragul… LOL!
Samantha Cole-...
Yeah NAt, they should send out a Catalogue after the exhibtion that will have all the winning , second placers, merits and aceppted images in it….

Natalie Manuel:
Oh cool, ta for help. That’ll be interesting to see.

Well done Natalie. Super effort.

I know in my camera club they have entries, acceptances, merits and honours. Entries pretty much acknowledge that you entered and nothing more. Acceptances tend to be the most common result in my camera club, with merits and honours behing higher up on the scale.
I’m told that at the local show competition which is a lot bigger it’s quite difficult to get shown on the walls, which I assume are the acceptances.
While I doubt any of it is exactly the same as your comp, I’d guess there’s some similarities!
