Calling any Adelaide Zoo go'ers
I’m thinking of spending a few days at Adelaide Zoo.
How easy/good are the enclosures for photography?
Anything I should know?
Any “rare” animals that Melbourne Zoo may not have?
How is the chimp enclosure?
Links to any galleries would be great :)
Oh and how busy does it get at school hols?

I haven’t been for ages Natalie. I’ll post this in the Adelaide Forum for you …. and have you checked with the Zoo because I think they do photography tours …..

Natalie, Overall I don’t think it is very photo friendly… especially the big cats area… lots of wire… the chimp enclosure has some decent viewing walk ways that do provide a clean view…
i took this photo at the Zoo
i guess you have checked out the Zoo website
alll the best,

Thanks guys.
Wire is ok….Melbourne Zoo has a LOT :) But some enclosures mean you never SEE the animal!

Hi Natalie – I went to the zoo about a fortnight ago. At the time a big section of the zoo was closed off due to construction work for a new panda exhibit. I don’t know how long this is expected to take. I was a bit disappointed because lots of pathways are blocked off.
Heres the map which shows the size of the giant panda exhibit under construction

I love the adelaide zoo, have got so many of my good shots from there and will be going back soon. The flamingos are my favourite (cant see them anywhere else in aust)

Were there many displays totally off display then or just harder to get around?

Theres not many displays closed off I guess but I think the chimps and great apes are missing in action – (which I know you love). Normally the Adelaide Zoo is very easy to get around and explore – I just found it frustrating with lots of dead ends at the moment.
Here my favs from the zoo:
Theres a glass section and an open viewing area to this enclosure.
The lions are surrounded by wire but you can lean in and zoom through…

Love the Giraffe shot, I’ve been crap with giraffe photos, I should try harder.
I might email them and ask if any are off display during april then, ta.

Wow there getting Panda’s! Awesome!

One section which is a must is the Ringed Tail Lemurs, you can get some really great photos of them, there are 7 in all. Also a visit in the enclosed bird avairy at around feeding time of 3.30pm is well worth a visit. the Panda exhibit will be open around October this year, I am looking forward to it.
Hope you enjoy your visit.

Apparently the pandas are due to be living in our zoo at the end of this year or early next year!!! There’s also Monarto Zoo, over at Murray Bridge. All the animals that were where the pandas are going have gone there. Zebras, buffalo and a few others. I haven’t been to Monarto yet, but I’ve heard its really good. The hippos are still at Adelaide Zoo, hiding down one of those dead ends that Shane was talking about.

Just found this thread and while off topic, I can certainly vouch for Monarto Zoo. I stopped there a year ago and the Giraffe enclosure is amazing. You are that their head height and they can stick their heads right in next to yours. On some days you can also book in to go inside the Cheetah enclosure and pat the three hand reared Cheetahs. Unfortuantely when i was there it was one of the worst days for photography. Pouring rain and strong wind. I will defiantely plan a return trip soon.
